Primary School Update - 30 August 2024

HEAD OF SCHOOL UPDATE Melanie Woods

Kindy Science & Technology

This week in Kindergarten, students participated in a learning task which required them to build a house out of specified materials. To activate prior knowledge during the previous lesson, the class read the story of The Three Little Pigs. Students needed to design a house that could not be blown down by the big bad wolf (a fan).

Each group needed to:

  1. Build their house on top of a sturdy board.

  2. Add a roof to the top.

  3. Only use the specific materials allocated to their group. Materials used were: straws, paddlepop sticks, playing cards, marshmallows and toothpicks.

With a lot of excitement each group tackled the building of their house. Some groups found that the materials they were given were harder to build with than others. They learnt that for them to be successful they needed to work as a team. The groups that managed to build a completed house withstood the strong wind. The students discussed the reason why some materials were difficult to build with and why some were not able to complete their house.

Therefore, students were able to:

  • Explore how materials have different properties.

  • Generate, record and explain design ideas through drawing and modelling.

  • Consider available resources, tools and materials to discover possibilities of their uses.

  • Sequence steps to collaboratively solve a designed solution with guidance.

  • Use personal preferences and predetermined criteria to evaluate the success of design ideas, processes or solutions.

Great memories were created and our students were wonderful Scientists. Please enjoy the pictures of their creations.

Book Week 2024 at ACC

Thank you to all the families that came and joined in with our Book Week Festivities. This year, the theme was ‘Reading Brings Wonder’ which was played out in so many ways. A number of activities were planned throughout the week to challenge and inspire all our students in their love of literature. The parades were filled with book characters and accompanied by fun and laughter. The Book Fair was sold out! Thank you to the many families that donated a book to our Library. The book will have a presentation sticker with the family’s name in thanks for the donation. Our Authors shared readings from their books and the students were intrigued at the process of book writing; from thinking of a book, writing it and how it was published. A big thank you to Miss Reichardt and Mrs Jones from the Library, and to our families, who made this year's Book Week a great success.

All Bodies are Good Bodies

As part of our ongoing support for the wellbeing of our students, we were pleased to introduce an important seminar for our Year 5 and 6 students, titled ‘All Bodies are Good Bodies’. This session focussed on fostering a positive body image and celebrating the diversity of body shapes and sizes. Please enjoy some of the photos from the event.

Uniform Update

A letter will soon be sent home regarding the unusual warm weather and changes to uniform. For the rest of the term, Summer uniform is permitted. For events requiring a blazer, this is still to be worn with Summer uniform.

Kinder Experience and Explore - 2025 Kinder Orientation

One of our Primary School values is ‘Love and Nurture’. We believe it is critical that each child has opportunities to maximise their potential, in order to provide the key building blocks early, which will underpin their success.

As part of the Integration Program for our future Kindergarten 2025 students, we have designed four events and would ask that Kinder 2025 students attend each of them. Each event is an ‘Experience and Explore Orientation’ for you and your child, which builds upon the previous event, bringing familiarity, relationship, community and learning.

Our desire is for your child to look forward to coming to school and feel they have already made connections with their peers, teaching staff and their new environment for the years to come.

We also desire that you, our parents, will make connections with other parents, with our staff, and with the Australian Christian College community at large.

This week, we gathered to enjoy our first Orientation Event for the year, which was a lovely opportunity for the new families and Kinder 2025 students to familiarise themselves with our school. The next event is:

  • Event 2 - Tuesday 10 September, 2024 - 9.00 am to 10.30 am in A Block Concourse (2024 Kinders and Family to attend)

  • Event 3 - Tuesday 22 October, 2024 - 9.00 am to 10.30 am in A Block Concourse (2024 Kinders to attend)

  • Event 4 - Monday 5 November, 2024 - Kinder Parent Evening 5.30 pm - 6.30 pm in the Tech Centre Lecture Theatre (Parents only)

I See You Star Morning Tea  Every Face has a Place at ACC and we continue to embed into the lives of all our students that we know them, that we see them. We want the students to know that we see their kindness, we see them being respectful, we see when they are learners, we see when they make Christ-like decisions and when they make wise and safe choices. To celebrate their hard work and efforts, students are invited to attend an ‘I See You Star’ Morning Tea each week, which is hosted by Mr Parsonage, the Stage Coordinators and Mrs Woods. This is an opportunity to spend quality time with them, thank and congratulate them for their good work.

4S CELEBRATES BOOK WEEK!

Molly Stanley

Students spent time preparing their costumes for the Book Week parade and reflected on their favourite authors, books and characters. It can be challenging to choose one! 4S fashionably walked the Book Parade with exciting costumes, ranging from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to the famous footballer, Ronaldo.

We also designed and decorated our door for Book Week. With the theme being ‘Reading Brings Wonder’, and the opportunity to include a Bible story, we set out to creatively brainstorm art ideas for our door.

Last term our novel study book included, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Students loved this text and were mesmerised by the correlation between Jesus and Aslan. Like a lion, we saw Jesus as mighty and brave- ready to defeat every giant victoriously. As Mr Beaver says, "Safe?" (...) "Who said anything about safe". "Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you.” This helped us remember how Jesus, like Aslan in the story, makes every enemy tremble. Jesus is as strong as a lion, and more!

Inspiring the theme of our Book Week door, we focused on Jesus being the lion and the lamb; reflecting Jesus as strong as a lion, and as humble as a lamb. We discussed as a class how Jesus demonstrated humility on earth, coming down to save us from our sins with an obedient heart, knowing that this would reconcile us with God.

Our Book Week door showcased two posters that stated ‘Wonder of God’ and ‘Wonder of Books’. Braydan craftily drew these signs in bubble writing and cut and pasted them onto colourful A3 posters. Hrishika hand drew a mighty lion to represent Jesus whilst Dimairaa drew a humble lamb. Students then made miniature lambs and lions to accompany the larger animals. Lastly, students were provided time to reflect on their lives- if they have seen Jesus as a lion, or a lamb. They then wrote their stories, and ponderings towards Jesus being humble or strong.

Students wrote:

"Jesus is my lion because he takes care of my family and me." - Curtis

"Jesus is like a lion because he scares away any enemy away from me."  - Edward

"He's a sheep and the cotton on earth is God keeping us warm." - Surya

"He's a lamb (...) as He has a soft heart." - Saanvi

As a class, it was a beautiful experience reflecting on the character and nature of Jesus. It was heartwarming seeing Jesus through the lens of 4S students. This was an opportunity to both share and learn together as a class. We hope you enjoyed seeing our door!
