Primary School Update - 2 August 2024

Updated: Aug 2

YEAR TWO MUSIC Kirsten Northwood

Year 2 have explored the technical components of music to build a solid foundation in their skills, including beat, tempo, rhythm and pitch. We have been focusing on note lengths such as whole notes, half notes, quarter notes and eighth notes to enhance rhythmic accuracy and timing in music when performing and composing. In addition, we have been familiarising ourselves with black and white music notation, where we can now identify and read the note on the staff and then transfer this knowledge when composing music on a blank staff. Students have had the opportunity to work in pairs, where they composed their own piece of music on the staff, and then performed their composition using the glockenspiel. They showed great delight in encouraging one another’s performance and felt a sense of achievement for their creations.

Year 2 have also been studying Australian Folk and Traditional Music, which has begun to open a connection to our country’s historical roots. The students have been excited to connect with their families about folk songs that were sung when their parents were at school.

By studying Australian Folk Music, students have gained an insight into the historical contexts shaped by these songs. They have enjoyed the storytelling of Australia’s diverse landscapes, from the rugged outback to the coastal communities. Students are understanding that folk songs capture the everyday experiences, struggles and triumphs of people, which is beginning to make them appreciate the power of music when expressing and conveying emotions and stories. They have extensively enjoyed this topic as they have been able to incorporate physical components by singing in rounds, learning traditional actions and using a variety of percussion instruments to read sheet music to play the melody.

DAN WARLOW CONCERT

Our Primary school was treated to an amazing concert by Dan Warlow, a Christian kids’ music artist. The students have been learning his songs, so it was a highly anticipated and greatly enjoyed event! Dan entertained everyone with his high energy songs and gave our students a fantastic start to Term 3.
