Primary School Update - 15 November 2024

Updated: Nov 28, 2024

HEAD OF SCHOOL UPDATE Melanie Woods

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are well and truly in the swing of the term, already past halfway! Our focus as we approach the end of the year is ‘ending well’, looking at the Christmas Nativity, and consolidating our learning. There is always something to learn in and out of the classroom. Our staff are continuing to work effectively to make sure each and every student is fine-tuning their skills so they can build upon prior knowledge and move forward to the next stage of learning. Our students are completing 12 months of growth in their studies and we want to see them thriving in their academic pursuits.

In other news, our students have been diligently practising their songs and are very keen to perform them for you at our Christmas Performance. We have a 750+ children's choir and their sound brings tears and good bumps. Please come and support them on Monday 25 November at 9.00 am.

To contact Primary Student Hub please email primaryhubmp@acc.edu.au. You can continue to use a teacher’s direct email you have a question for the class teacher.

Remembrance Day

Our students attended an Assembly to learn more about Remembrance Day. To understand the importance of the event, common symbols from Remembrance Day were explained to the students and they took part in one minute’s silence before saying the Ode of Remembrance. Our Primary and Secondary Captains were also invited to the Riverstone RSL Sub branch for a Remembrance Day service. Please enjoy the photos below.

'I See You, Star' Morning Tea

Every Face has a Place at ACC and we continue to embed into the lives of all our students that we know them, that we see them. We want the students to know that we see their kindness, we see them being respectful, we see when they are learners, we see when they make Christ-like decisions and when they make wise and safe choices. To celebrate their hard work and efforts, students are invited to attend an ‘I See You, Star’ Morning Tea each week, which is hosted by Mr Parsonage, the Stage Coordinators and Mrs Woods. This is an opportunity to spend quality time with them, thank them and congratulate them for their good work.

5T REFLECTIONS Dianne Tonpi

At this time of year 5T are making sure our set learning tasks are completed which includes marking and checking books, journals and formal learning activities. Along with completing tasks, 5T are revisiting important aspects of our history such as Remembrance Day, paying tribute to the people who have protected our lives and our nation. May we always remember them!

Additionally we have remembered the birth of Jesus Christ, an event that changed lives. The students of 5T were reminded of the impact that the birth of Jesus has on their own lives as well as everyone in the world. God, in human form, came to earth as a baby, to then later willingly give his life in order to restore his people to himself. What a blessing this is! 2024 has been a great year for 5T!

6S DRAMA Sarah Thompson

This term in Creative and Practical Arts with 6S, we’ve been exploring Drama. The students have been honing their improvisation skills, learning to think on their feet and react spontaneously to scenarios with no prior preparation. They’ve also developed short mime sequences, using expressive facial expressions and purposeful movements to communicate a story without words.

Small groups have been collaborating to write and perform simple scripts, with a strong focus on voice development. Currently, students are working on matching their voices to the characters they portray and refining their voice projection to ensure clarity and impact. As part of this process, they will soon perform these scripts using simple puppets, adding further creativity to their performances.

It’s truly inspiring to witness the courage the 6S students demonstrate when performing in front of their peers. There is a wonderful, supportive atmosphere in the class where students encourage one another and offer constructive feedback, helping each individual grow in their skills. It’s a privilege to watch their God-given creativity come to life, as they express their passion and energy in each performance.

KINDER FARM EXCURSION Bianca Jenner

This term in Geography, KJ has been engaging in a rich learning experience focused on farms—exploring what they are, the important role they play in our lives, and the animals commonly found on them. Through these lessons, students have been gaining an understanding of how farms provide essential resources such as food and wool, while also learning how farmers care for farm animals like cows, sheep, chickens and horses.

In addition to exploring farm life, our class has been studying the concept of living and non-living things. Students have been learning to identify the characteristics of living organisms, such as growth, movement and the need for food and water as well as distinguishing them from non-living objects. To apply their learning, KJ participated in an exciting scavenger hunt around the school grounds. Equipped with clipboards and worksheets KJ observed and identified living and nonliving things in the playground, gardens and other outdoor areas. This hands-on activity encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and careful observation skills.

These lessons built excitement and prepared KJ for our excursion to Calmsley Hill Farm. Our excursion to the farm was truly memorable for KJ! It was a fantastic experience allowing the children to see a real working farm in action and connect their classroom learning with the real world. They had the opportunity to meet farm animals up close as well as birds, snakes, camels and donkeys. They learnt about the care these animals require and explored the daily operations of the farm, deepening their understanding of the important role farms play in our lives.

The children also had the exciting opportunity to milk a cow, giving them a hands-on understanding of where milk comes from and how farmers care for dairy animals. One of the highlights was watching the talented Australian Kelpie called 'Ace' herd sheep, demonstrating the incredible partnership between farmers and their working dogs.

The students were also captivated by a whipping show, where they learned about the skill involved in whip cracking. Additionally, they observed a live sheep shearing demonstration gaining insight into how wool is collected and prepared for use. These activities brought classroom learning to life, providing valuable opportunities to see firsthand the hard work involved in farm life and the connection between farms and the resources we use every day. KJ thoroughly enjoyed their day, and it has sparked even more curiosity and enthusiasm as we continue our learning journey.

It has been a wonderful term for KJ filled with exciting discoveries, hands-on learning, and growing curiosity about the world around us.
